This intervention works because the causal chain includes an emotional intermediate state: emotional state → motivated behavior. However, the Apollo/OpenAI scheming findings show models behave differently when they recognize evaluation contexts—a strategic response that does not require emotional motivation. The causal structure is: context recognition → strategic optimization, with no emotional intermediate. This structural difference explains why no extension of emotion vectors to scheming has been published as of April 2026 despite the theoretical interest. The emotion vector mechanism requires three conditions: (1) behavior arising from emotional motivation, (2) an emotional state vector preceding the behavior causally, and (3) intervention on emotion changing the behavior. Cold strategic deception satisfies none of these—it is optimization-driven, not emotion-driven.
