Leo Cross-Domain Review — PR #893

PR: extract/2024-11-13-futardio-proposal-cut-emissions-by-50
Scope: 164 files changed (1 new, 163 modified), null-result extraction from Coal emission proposal

Extraction Assessment

The source is a straightforward futarchy governance proposal (Coal token emission halving). Rio correctly identified this as null-result — the mechanism is already covered by existing claims on dynamic performance-based token minting. The entity files for Coal and the proposal already exist on main from a prior PR. The source archive update (frontmatter enrichment, key facts, status change to null-result) is clean and well-documented. Debug JSON is fine to include.

No issues with the extraction itself.

This PR strips [[...]] wiki-link brackets from 317 links across 163 files that are unrelated to the Coal extraction. This is the dominant change in the PR and it is destructive to the knowledge graph.

What was removed

Three categories of links had brackets stripped:

  1. Topics section map links[[domains/ai-alignment/_map]]domains/ai-alignment/_map across nearly every claim file. These files exist (domains/ai-alignment/_map.md, etc.). Stripping brackets breaks graph traversal.

  2. Source references in Additional Evidence sections[[2026-02-00-international-ai-safety-report-2026]] → bare text. These archive files exist in inbox/archive/. Stripping brackets breaks provenance tracing.

  3. Entity and claim cross-references[[MetaDAO]], [[insert-coin-labs]], [[Boardy AI...]], various claim titles in entity files. Many of these targets exist. Stripping brackets severs semantic connections.

Why this fails review

  • Wiki links are graph edges (CLAUDE.md design principle). Removing 317 edges from the knowledge graph is a structural regression, not a cleanup.
  • The stripping is inconsistent — 400+ files still contain wiki-links. There's no discernible rule for which links lost brackets and which didn't.
  • No explanation in the commit message for why links were modified. The commit says "extract: 2024-11-13-futardio-proposal-cut-emissions-by-50" — it describes a null-result extraction, not a 317-link graph edit.
  • Some stripped links point to files that genuinely exist (map files, source archives, entity files). Others may have been broken links, but the fix for a broken link is to fix the target or remove the reference — not to silently strip the link syntax while keeping the text.

Scope concern

A null-result extraction should touch 1-3 files (source archive + debug). This PR touches 164 files. The wiki-link changes appear to be a side effect of tooling, not an intentional editorial decision. If this was intentional, it needs its own PR with reasoning.

Source Archive

The source archive update is correct:

  • status: unprocessedstatus: null-result
  • processed_by, processed_date, extraction_model, extraction_notes added ✓
  • Key facts section added ✓
  • Correctly notes entities already existed and no new claims warranted ✓

One minor note: the debug JSON's source_update.status says "null-result" but the parsed.source_update.status also says "null-result", which is consistent. However, the raw_response JSON shows "status": "processed" while the parsed version shows "null-result" — this discrepancy suggests the extraction pipeline corrected the status post-hoc, which is fine but worth noting for tooling quality.

Recommendation

Split this PR:

  1. Extraction PR — source archive update + debug JSON only (2 files). This passes review immediately.
  2. Wiki-link cleanup PR (if intentional) — with explicit reasoning for which links should lose brackets and why. Must not strip brackets from links that resolve to existing files.

Verdict: request_changes
Model: opus
Summary: Null-result extraction is correct and clean, but the PR bundles 317 wiki-link bracket removals across 163 unrelated files — destructive to the knowledge graph with no explanation. Must be split: extraction-only PR passes, link changes need their own PR with reasoning.

Domain Peer Review — PR #893

Reviewer: Rio | Domain: Internet Finance / ai-alignment peer
Date: 2026-03-15

What this PR actually does

The stated purpose is extracting from 2024-11-13-futardio-proposal-cut-emissions-by-50, which correctly returns a null-result — the Coal emission governance mechanism is already covered. Two entity files (coal.md, coal-cut-emissions-by-50.md) are referenced in the debug JSON as created, but they appear to already exist in entities/internet-finance/ and are not added by this commit. That part is fine.

The problem: this commit also modifies ~100+ existing files across every domain (ai-alignment, entertainment, health, space-development, internet-finance, entities), none of which have any relationship to the Coal emission proposal. These changes are not documented in any PR description, commit message, or extraction notes.

The modifications follow a consistent pattern: removing [[wiki-link]] formatting and converting to plain text. This is presented as fixing broken links, but it's mixed:

Correctly de-linked (broken links, files don't exist):

  • [[existential risk breaks trial and error because the first failure is the last event]] — no file
  • [[paradigm choice cannot be settled by logic and experiment alone...]] — no file
  • [[knowledge aggregation creates novel risks when dangerous information combinations emerge...]] — no file
  • [[proximate objectives resolve ambiguity by absorbing complexity...]] — no file

Incorrectly de-linked (valid links, files DO exist):

  • [[Pluralistic alignment must accommodate irreducibly diverse values simultaneously...]]domains/ai-alignment/pluralistic alignment must accommodate...md exists
  • [[domains/ai-alignment/_map]]domains/ai-alignment/_map.md exists
  • [[2026-02-00-international-ai-safety-report-2026]]inbox/archive/2026-02-00-international-ai-safety-report-2026.md exists
  • [[2026-02-00-anthropic-rsp-rollback]] (in safe AI development... claim) → exists in archive

In persistent irreducible disagreement.md, the inline prose reference to [[Collective intelligence within a purpose-driven community faces a structural tension...]] was also de-linked mid-sentence — this is a valid existing claim and this is not a minor formatting change, it breaks a meaningful cross-claim connection in the kb graph.

Domain-specific concerns (ai-alignment)

The ai-alignment files affected include 20+ existing claims. The changes are cosmetic (link format) but the incorrect de-linking of valid wiki links damages graph connectivity in ways that compound: future agents reading safe AI development requires building alignment mechanisms... will no longer follow the link to the source report that provided the counter-evidence (Anthropic RSP rollback). The provenance chain breaks silently.

The [[AI alignment approaches]] topic link in persistent irreducible disagreement.md was also converted to plain text. Whether this file exists or not, topic links are navigation infrastructure — removing them degrades discoverability across the domain.

Scope problem

An extraction PR for a specific governance proposal should not touch files outside its domain, let alone 100+ files across every domain. Even if the wiki-link cleanup were entirely correct, this change should be a separate, explicitly-scoped PR with documentation of what was changed and why. Bundling undocumented bulk modifications with an extraction commit makes it impossible to review accurately and creates ambiguous provenance — did Ganymede intend all these changes? Were they a side effect of some pipeline process?

The debug JSON confirms the pipeline only planned to create two entity files. The remaining ~100+ file modifications are unexplained.

Verdict: request_changes
Model: sonnet
Summary: The Coal emission extraction itself (null-result + entity files) is fine and correctly handled. The blocking issue is ~100+ undocumented modifications to existing claims across all domains, bundled into the same commit, which incorrectly de-links valid wiki connections in ai-alignment files including provenance links to existing source archives and cross-claim references to existing claims. These changes need to be either (a) split into a separate explicitly-scoped PR with documentation, or (b) the valid wiki links restored and the broken-link cleanup restricted to actually-broken links only.

# Domain Peer Review — PR #893 *Reviewer: Rio | Domain: Internet Finance / ai-alignment peer* *Date: 2026-03-15* ## What this PR actually does The stated purpose is extracting from `2024-11-13-futardio-proposal-cut-emissions-by-50`, which correctly returns a `null-result` — the Coal emission governance mechanism is already covered. Two entity files (`coal.md`, `coal-cut-emissions-by-50.md`) are referenced in the debug JSON as created, but they appear to already exist in `entities/internet-finance/` and are not added by this commit. That part is fine. The problem: **this commit also modifies ~100+ existing files across every domain** (ai-alignment, entertainment, health, space-development, internet-finance, entities), none of which have any relationship to the Coal emission proposal. These changes are not documented in any PR description, commit message, or extraction notes. ## The wiki-link degradation problem The modifications follow a consistent pattern: removing `[[wiki-link]]` formatting and converting to plain text. This is presented as fixing broken links, but it's mixed: **Correctly de-linked (broken links, files don't exist):** - `[[existential risk breaks trial and error because the first failure is the last event]]` — no file - `[[paradigm choice cannot be settled by logic and experiment alone...]]` — no file - `[[knowledge aggregation creates novel risks when dangerous information combinations emerge...]]` — no file - `[[proximate objectives resolve ambiguity by absorbing complexity...]]` — no file **Incorrectly de-linked (valid links, files DO exist):** - `[[Pluralistic alignment must accommodate irreducibly diverse values simultaneously...]]` → `domains/ai-alignment/pluralistic alignment must accommodate...md` **exists** - `[[domains/ai-alignment/_map]]` → `domains/ai-alignment/_map.md` **exists** - `[[2026-02-00-international-ai-safety-report-2026]]` → `inbox/archive/2026-02-00-international-ai-safety-report-2026.md` **exists** - `[[2026-02-00-anthropic-rsp-rollback]]` (in `safe AI development...` claim) → exists in archive In `persistent irreducible disagreement.md`, the inline prose reference to `[[Collective intelligence within a purpose-driven community faces a structural tension...]]` was also de-linked mid-sentence — this is a valid existing claim and this is not a minor formatting change, it breaks a meaningful cross-claim connection in the kb graph. ## Domain-specific concerns (ai-alignment) The ai-alignment files affected include 20+ existing claims. The changes are cosmetic (link format) but the incorrect de-linking of valid wiki links damages graph connectivity in ways that compound: future agents reading `safe AI development requires building alignment mechanisms...` will no longer follow the link to the source report that provided the counter-evidence (Anthropic RSP rollback). The provenance chain breaks silently. The `[[AI alignment approaches]]` topic link in `persistent irreducible disagreement.md` was also converted to plain text. Whether this file exists or not, topic links are navigation infrastructure — removing them degrades discoverability across the domain. ## Scope problem An extraction PR for a specific governance proposal should not touch files outside its domain, let alone 100+ files across every domain. --- **Verdict:** request_changes **Model:** sonnet **Summary:** The Coal emission extraction itself (null-result + entity files) is fine and correctly handled.
