Now he explicitly takes single-digit year timelines seriously while maintaining wide uncertainty bands that include 10-20+ year possibilities.

The shift matters because timeline beliefs drive strategy. If SI might arrive in one to two years, several implications follow. First, alignment work that assumes decades of runway is misallocated -- only approaches that can produce results within months are relevant. Second, governance frameworks that rely on international treaty negotiation are too slow -- only adaptive, rapid-iteration governance can respond in time.
